Winter Update, 2017

I’m very excited this year about the prospects for both the Icelandic and Shetland lambs!

Icelandics: This year, I have a wonderful mix of breeding with AI sires and F1 AI farm rams!  I will have F1 lambs from horned sires Bjalki, Drifandi, Grámann, and Vali; polled sire Erpur, and leader sires Florgodi and Golsi and Karl Philip, with additional F2 AI genetics (Blettur, Grabotni, Salamon, Ylur; Grafeldur, Höttur, Langidalur, Skrauti, Vodvi; Golsi, Loftur) represented in the breeding ewes and farm rams.   Additional new AI sires were sadly not available for a second year (!) as USDA blocked any import from Iceland until a new import protocol is in place.  And while the sires I used this year were not new to the U.S. (or even to the Trinity Farm breeding program), they were ones that have in the past produced really spectacular lambs for me, so I’m really excited to see their offspring this year.

And so…..My “who is bred to whom” list, can be found below.  As a note – listings of crosses are based on the sire (e.g.: Vali, horned; Erpur, polled).

Shetlands:  Last year was a wonderful year for lambs, and this winter I again bred a number of ewes, using a selection of former and new sires.  They were primarily selected from a group of spectacular boys from four years ago, and some equally wonderful yearlings – a hard decision, but one made a bit easier because I had some information from previous years’ lambs.  I have made some of the breedings because I got wonderful lambs from a particular pair, and some breedings to try to get particular colors, patterns or fleece characteristics.  This year, I was particularly interested in obtaining lambs with various shades of gray and musket, as well as some that would be really “flashy.”

You can check out the possibilities on my “who is bred to whom.” list, below.

If you are planning to add to your flock or start a new flock, I am accepting “lamb reservations.”

Reservations of $100/lamb are taken in order of receipt, and this reserves you a place (or places) in line to choose from the “available lambs list” once they’ve had an evaluation.  Once the list is sent to you, you will have one week to make your decision(s). and then the list will be sent to the next in line.  If you wish to take advantage of this, please be sure to specify what you are interested in:  Horned Icelandic, Polled Icelandic, or Shetland.  If we do not have a lamb that meets your requirements, your deposit will be promptly refunded, if you choose, or it can be held for the following year (in which case you would likely be closer to the top of the list).  Questions?  Please email or call!

SHETLANDS

I set up 5 breeding groups this year.  I’m using two of my older proven boys that give flashy lambs with stunning fleece and three yearling rams that are different shades of gray (modifier here?).  I’m expecting some real beauties in the spring!

**Oiseval – my moorit caped flecket ram – actually caped flecket with a cute white cap.  I am looking for flashy lambs from these three girls, and hopefully more caped flecket.

x Foula – A gray katmoget, carrying moorit.  I’m always looking for ways this girl can produce more of this pattern.   Her lambs (if they are not moorit) will carry moorit from the sire.  Would love to get a moorit katmoget!

x Hirta – My gray caped flecket who carries moorit, and who reliably gave me caped flecket lambs when bred to Boron, my retired flecket ram.  More caped flecket are a possibilty, in either blacks or moorits.

x Soay – My ultra-friendly moorit yuglet girl. Looking for lambs with a wonderful musket fleece.

**Holm – a gray yuglet ram who carries moorit.  He has the most amazing long, crimpy fleece, and the widest horns I’ve ever seen.  Looking for great fleece and pleasing patterns from these two girls.

x Kettla – A musket yuglet ilget with a brilliant white (with small musket spots) that is a spinners’ dream. This is her first year of breeding.  Lambs may be gray, musket, moorit, or black, and will be spotted – perhaps so much that they are almost all a stunning white.

x Urie – A striking gray yuglet flecket girl with an incredibly soft fleece, also in her first year of breeding. Lambs will be flashy, perhaps gray, and if not moorit, must carry moorit.

**Magnus – a gray (possibly carrying moorit and the modifier) yearling ram, his first year of work.  He’s the son of Lewis, a stunning gray ram who has gone to another flock to spread his wonderful genetics. A very friendly boy, with a wonderful color. Hoping he will pass on the modifier.

x Rysa – This moorit krunet caped flecket(actually the cape extends almost all the way back – a long cape) is the daughter of Oiseval and granddaughter of my beloved foundation ewe Kilda. Looking for another caped flecked in gray…or musket…or…

**Daal – a moderately dark gray yearling ram, his first year of work.  He must carry moorit.

x Mousa – A black blettet with a “kindly” fleece.  Looking for black or gray from this pair – or maybe moorit.

**Sneck – a very dark gray (emsket?) yearling ram, his first year of work.  Like his brother Daal, he must carry moorit.

x Fetlar – A light gray girl carrying moorit. Lambs are likely to have some facial markings, but a uniform body, likely some flavor of gray.  A wonderfully soft fleece is guaranteed.

x Havra – A moorit krunet bielset girl with an interesting fleece color. This is her first year of breeding.  Based on the white markings of the parents, the lambs may be almost completely colored – musket, gray, moorit, or black.
