Winter Update, 2016

I’m very excited this year about the prospects for both the Icelandic and Shetland lambs!

Icelandics: This year, I have a wonderful mix of breeding with AI sires and F1 AI farm rams!  I will be having lambs from Golsi, an AI leader sire new to this country, and from Sokki, a horned new to my farm.  Additional new sires were sadly not available as USDA blocked any import from Iceland until a new import protocol is in place.  However, there were many other AI sires I used this this year that have in the past produced really spectacular lambs for me, and so were selected for the possibilities that I could find with their offspring.

And so…..My “who is bred to whom” list, can be found below.  As a note – listings of crosses are based on the sire (e.g.: Vali, horned; Grafeldur, polled).

Shetlands: Last year was a wonderful year for lambs, and this winter I again bred a number of ewes, using a selection of former and new sires.  They were primarily selected from a group of sectacular boys from four years ago, and some equally wonderful yearlings – a hard decision, but one made a bit easier because I had some information from previous years’ lambs.  I have made some of the breedings because I got wonderful lambs from a particular pair, and some breedings to try to get particular colors, patterns or fleece characteristics.  This year, I was particularly interested in obtaining lambs with various shades of gray and musket.

You can check out the possibilities on my “who is bred to whom.” list, below.

If you are planning to add to your flock or start a new flock, I am accepting “lamb reservations.”

SHETLANDS

I set up 3 breeding groups this year, with an additional ram used for breeding at a neighboring flock:

**Lewis – my black-gray sponget ram, carrying moorit – a handsome pewter gray with a black Zorro mask.  His sire carried the modifier, so breeding will hopefully tell if Lewis carries it too.  These pairings include one line-breeding to retain a high percentage of Forvik’s genetics and to obtain more gray and musket/fawn in the flock.  Handspinners LOVE gray (and so do I!).

x Mousa – A black blettet with a “kindly” fleece.  These two produced a spectacular gray lamb last year and one the year before!  Going for more of the same.  Hopefully a ewe!

x Seraphim– A musket yuglet with a fleece like butter, which she passes down to all her offspring!   This pairing should produce a nice gray or musket.  Lambs may be flashy if they take after Seraphim, but if they take after Lewis, the only spotting will be on the face.

x Soay – My ultra-friendly moorit yuglet girl. Looking for lambs with a wonderful musket fleece.  Spotting (or not) will be as for Seraphim.

**Holm – a gray yuglet ram who carries moorit.  He has the most amazing long, crimpy fleece, and the widest horns I’ve ever seen.  Looking for great fleece and pleasing patterns from these two girls.

.

x Foula – A gray katmoget, carrying moorit.  I’m always looking for ways this girl can produce more of this pattern.   Her lambs (if they are not moorit) may carry moorit from either parent.  Would love to get a moorit katmoget!.

x Lilac – A black smirslet ewe with a fine, kindly fleece.  Hoping that she will give me the flashy lambs in a stunning gray.  More smirslet would be nice too!

**Noss – an emsket (possibly carrying moorit) yearling ram, his first year of work.  A very friendly boy, with a wonderful color. Hoping he will pass on the modifier.

x Fetlar – A light gray girl carrying moorit. Her mother is Seraphim.  Likely to have some facial markings, but a uniform body.  A wonderfully soft fleece is guaranteed.

x Hirta – My gray caped flecket who carries moorit, and who reliably gave me caped flecket lambs when bred to Boron, my retired flecket ram.  More caped flecket are a possibilty, in either blacks or moorits.

x Myrtle – A black gray yuglet who carries moorit – lambs could be black, gray, musket or moorit. Or these colors modified.  Fleece will be soft as butter!

**Mull – a musket yuglet flecket yearling ram, his first year of work.  A very friendly boy, with incredible fleece.

x Chrysanthemum – This is a white pattern ewe from the Glebe Farm flock.  I have wanted white pattern in my flock, and this opportunity was too good to miss.  “Mum” has moorit in her heritage, so there may be lambs that are a flashy moorit or musket…or white.
